On Friday, 06th September 2019, 37 Officers undergoing a Junior Command and Staff Course (JCSC/13) at RDF Command and Staff College in Nyakinama, Musanze District visited Rwanda Meteorology Agency Headquarters and Maranyundo weather radar site in Bugesera District.
The purpose of the visit was to introduce to student officers some of the Government policies and programmes that impact the national social economic development and security landscape.
Mr. Aimable Gahigi, the Director General of Rwanda Meteorology Agency guided officers in touring meteorological premises. He informed them services and products offered by Meteo Rwanda and how they are produced.
The Director General said that meteorological services are useful in agriculture, infrastructure, disaster management, water resources management, environment management, among others.
The Director General said that Meteo Rwanda works closely with security agencies by providing hourly, daily, monthly and seasonal weather forecast during and after every operation like in the Aviation sectors, Marine operations and daily operations, every operation without weather information would be inadequate.
“Mete Rwanda as a Government institution has a mandate to provide accurate, timely, and tailored weather information to the security agencies in order to facilitate their daily operations. You will agree with me that bad weather conditions can affect security operations in one way or another,” noted Director General.
After touring Meteo Rwanda, the Officers visited the Maranyundo Weather Radar site in Bugesera District. The weather radar with display at Meteo Rwanda, Minsitry of Defence and Kigali International Airport is useful in monitoring weather changes over Rwanda in short time possible. It is also very useful to generate short range forecast and weather warnings.
On behalf of the delegation, Major Mbabazi Barasa, Course Coordinator said that they chose to visit Meteo Rwanda given the fact that meteorology is part of their daily activities. He commended Meteo Rwanda’s senior management for accepting to host the student officers. He added that the visit was educative.
The visit ended by exchange of gifts on both sides.
